The Producer:
The Funkstille range of Austrian wine takes inspiration from relaxing a moment to enjoy radio silence, the meaning of 'Funkstille'. The ruby red Blaufränkisch grapes are vinified at the estate's energy-neutral winery, and cold-soaked for 5 days after which fermentation starts slowly. Twice-daily pump-overs are carried out for the first 10 days and then the wine is left on the skins for a further 5 days with just one pump-over per day. The finished wine then goes into old wooden 5,000-8,000 litre barrels, with 10% going into 2-3-year-old barriques. The components are blended before bottling.
This painstaking vinification process pays off creating a classic style of Blaufränkisch which is fresh and fruit-driven. An abundance of blackberries and dark fruit flavours. The intense fruity flavours are paired perfectly with a balanced peppery spice on the finish. Try with hearty stews, pork, beef, lamb or with mushroom stroganoff.
Ferdinand Mayr Winery who produce this range are sustainably certified by agroVet, and also produce their own fertiliser. Vineyards are based in the Niederösterreich region, sited on loess-clay-granite mix soils with a cool continental climate. and elevation of 230-300m.
